Earwax is produced by the ear to clean and protect itself. It’s secreted by glands in the skin that line the outer half of your ear canals. The wax and tiny hairs in these passages trap dust, skin debris and other foreign particles that could damage deeper structures.
Typical symptoms of excess ear wax can be ear ache, difficulty hearing, ringing (Tinnitus), itchiness, dizzy spells and ear infection.
Cleaning inside the ear isn’t necessary as most of the wax washes away naturally. In fact cleaning inside the ears can cause the wax to be pushed deeper, impacting the wax, blocking the ear and causing temporary hearing loss.
Other causes include: frequent use of earphones and hearing aids. Both of these prevent the natural cycle of wax removal from the inner to the outer ear. Over 60% of hearing aids sent back because they were supposedly faulty, have in fact been found to be because of wax blocking the canal.

What to expect from your appointment?
Your appointment will last for approximately 45 minutes.
During your consultation, Mr Paul will carry out a Pre-Otoscopic examination of the ear canals to examine the extent of impaction.
Mr Paul will then remove any ear wax either via Microsuction – Gold Standard or Controlled Irrigation.
You will then receive a Post-Otoscopic Examination following extraction.
As part of our service we also offer advice and guidance to help ease excessive ear wax build-up.
If it isn’t possible to finish cleaning the ear during your initial visit e.g. if there is stubborn wax or if the ear canal is sensitive, then follow-up appointments will be free of charge, until the wax has been cleared successfully. This is on the condition that you adhere to the instructions provided by your specialist to help resolve any issues in between visits.
During your consultation we allow enough time to check the health of both ears and, if necessary, clean both.
